Peggy Day Adventures

August 18 - 26, 2017

Join the Tibetans as they celebrate the traditional Yoghurt Festival in Lhasa, the Shoton, welcoming the monks out of their summer retreat. Witness the unfurling of an antique 60' silk-appliqued thangkha and the dramatic religious ceremony that goes along with it. Wander through the colorful tents and picnics in the Norbulinka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. Enjoy the day with Tibetans celebrating this popular festival as they watch the Tibetan Opera performers dance in their elaborate costumes.

Visit the Potala Palace, the most sacred Jokhang Temple and other important sites in Lhasa. In order to have a more comprehensive view, we travel in the countryside on a newly paved road, climbing out of our valley and passing farmers using yaks to plow their fields. We cross the 4790m Kamba la Pass with its panoramic views, to the Yamdrok or Turquoise Lake, probably with migrating birds on its shore.

The road is an engineering feat as it easily takes us through very rugged country, past mountains with glaciers, nomads with their herds of yak and pony and white-washed villages. You'll stay in the historic towns of Gyantse, Shigatse, Samye and Tsedang, each with their own unique story. Visit the fortress town of Gyantse with its unique temple called the Kumbum; the monastery, in Shigatse, spend time in the Tashilumpo, which was the seat of the Panchen Lama, second only to the Dalai Lama; outside of town, explore an old monastery that is Bonpo, of the old animistic religion; ride a wooden boat with pilgrims to Samye, the first monastery in Tibet; visit Trandruk, an 8th century temple that is being restored and beautiful in its transition.

In Trandruk, there is a thangkha of Chenrezi, the Buddha of Compassion, made out of natural pearls, tucked awayin a back room. Don't miss it!

Activities: Sightseeing, lots of walking, festival, travel by car, train and boat. All hotels, no camping. Optional extension across Himalaya to Kathmandu, Nepal
