~BHUTAN: An Intimate Introduction~

A Personal Introduction to Inspirational Friends and Sacred Spaces
March 17 - 31, 2019

In the 8th century, Mahayana Buddhism was brought to Bhutan by Guru Rinpoche, considered to be the greatest spirit tamer in history. Through his magical powers, he overcame the enemies of Buddhism and firmly established the religion throughout the Kingdom.

Resonant with tales of magic and never conquered by foreign powers, Bhutan is the last remaining Buddhist Kingdom in the Himalaya: its devotees follow the Mahayana sect of Buddhism. It is transitioning into a democracy with one foot firmly planted in the 12th century and the other foot firmly planted in the 21st.

We'll explore this transition as we travel to Paro, Thimphu and Punakha in western Bhutan; central Bhutan from the Black Mountains to Trongsa and the three famous valleys of Bumthang: Chumey, Choekhar and Ura. Besides sightseeing, hiking and enjoying a river rafting day trip as we travel across the spiritual heartland of the country. there will be special opportunities to experience the culture in a local way.

Activities: Sightseeing, hiking, river rafting, time to learn Buddhist teachings.
